Newbury to Theale along The Kennet and Avon Canal

We drove to Theale (just West of Reading), parked at the station, took the train to Newbury and walked back to Theale along the towpath of the Kennet and Avon Canal. Of course this was very flat and easy walking.

We'd researched pubs at which to have lunch but arrived at the first before it was open. The second turned out to be closed for refurbishment. Jacket potatoes and coffee at the Kennet & Avon Visitor Centre at Aldermaston were fine, but not quite what we had in mind.

West Wycombe, Bradenham and Saunderton

Another early start to get the best of the weather. The hint of some rain as we got close to the car.

Marlow Common and Homefield Wood

An early start to see the Military Orchids before the forecast lunchtime showers (that didn't actually materialise).
Military orchidBird's Nest OrchidNot actually sure what this is. It was at the bottom of a tree and over a foot across . Could be 'tree foam' or maybe Slime Mould.

The Cross Guns at Bradford on Avon

A short stroll to stretch our legs (and, in some cases, wake us up) halfway back from Devon.
Naturally, there was a pub en route - The Cross Guns at Avoncliff, next to the aqueduct where the Kennet and Avon Canal crosses the River Avon. As the designated non-driver, I was able to sample a couple of the beers from the nearby Box Steam Brewery - both excellent. Best beer of the trip.
